The Financial Services Council’s continuing work on the Life Insurance Code of Practice is now less about consultation and more about how reforms will be embedded in everyday customer experience.
For Australian households, that matters because the Code influences how insurers explain policies, assess applications, support vulnerable customers and manage claims during some of life’s most difficult moments.

This development extends earlier Life Code reform coverage, where the focus was on the independent review process and the broad direction of consumer protections. The practical question now is whether the next version of the Code will make it easier for policyholders to understand what they are buying, what may be excluded, and what will happen if they or their family need to claim.

For many Australians, the biggest benefit would be clearer communication before problems arise. Life insurance documents can be technical, particularly where cover includes total and permanent disability, trauma insurance, income protection or insurance held through superannuation. Stronger standards around plain-language explanations, timely updates and proactive notices could reduce the risk of families discovering limits only after illness, injury or death has occurred.

Claims handling is another key area to watch. A policy’s value is not only the sum insured; it is also the insurer’s ability to request information early, explain delays, make fair decisions and keep claimants informed. Where a grieving family is waiting for a death benefit, or an injured worker is relying on income protection, unclear processes can quickly become a financial and emotional burden.

The Code’s treatment of vulnerable customers is also important. Financial hardship, mental health challenges, family violence, language barriers and serious illness can all affect how a person deals with an insurer. Better processes should help ensure customers are not simply sent standard forms and generic letters when their circumstances require more careful handling.

For policyholders, the message is not to wait for industry reform before reviewing their own arrangements. Check whether your benefit amounts still reflect your mortgage, dependants, income and debts. If your circumstances have changed, it may be worth using a tool to estimate their cover needs before comparing policy options or seeking personal advice.

The latest Code work is a useful reminder that life insurance Australia is evolving under closer scrutiny. Stronger rules should improve standards, but individual suitability still depends on the wording, ownership structure, premium type, exclusions and claims pathway of each policy. A regular review remains one of the most practical ways to make sure cover will do what your family expects when it is needed most.
