The National Truck Accident Research Centre (NTARC), supported by National Transport Insurance (NTI), has released its latest Major Incident Investigation Report, shedding light on the predominant causes of significant truck crashes across Australia.
The findings underscore the critical need for targeted interventions to enhance road safety within the transport industry.

According to the report, human factors such as inattention and distraction were the leading causes of major loss incidents among trucks last year. These incidents occurred at a rate of 69.9 per 10,000 heavy vehicles, with inattention and distraction accounting for nearly one-third of all human factor-related incidents.

NTI CEO Janelle Greene emphasised the importance of addressing these issues, stating that the research highlights opportunities to improve safety. She noted that heavy vehicle drivers face high levels of unpredictability in the workplace, including road conditions, environmental factors, and load mass and geometry.

The report also revealed that among fatal truck and car crashes, heavy vehicles were not at fault in 85.7% of cases. This statistic highlights the need for comprehensive road safety strategies that address the behaviours of all road users.

For fleet operators and drivers, these findings serve as a call to action to implement and adhere to robust safety protocols. Investing in driver training programs that focus on maintaining attention and managing distractions can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Additionally, leveraging technology such as in-cab monitoring systems can help identify and mitigate risky behaviours in real-time.

As the transport industry continues to evolve, prioritising safety through proactive measures and continuous education will be essential in reducing the incidence of human error-related crashes and ensuring the well-being of all road users.
