In a significant development for the Australian construction industry, MECON Insurance has announced an increase in its underwriting capacity, now offering coverage up to $120 million for single projects.
This enhancement, effective from March 10, 2026, applies to Section 1 (Material Damage) and includes Section 2 (Public Liability), providing more substantial support for larger and more complex construction ventures.

The decision to expand coverage stems from a growing demand among brokers and clients for higher insurance limits on domestic construction risks. By increasing its capacity, MECON aims to offer greater flexibility in structuring insurance placements, potentially reducing the need for multiple insurers on a single project. This move is particularly beneficial for mid- to large-scale projects that require substantial coverage.

To facilitate this expansion, MECON has secured Lloyd's coverholder status, granting access to Lloyd's capacity for Australian construction risks placed through brokers. This strategic partnership enhances MECON's ability to underwrite larger projects while maintaining robust financial backing.

Kishan Dasan, General Manager of MECON, emphasized the benefits of the new capacity arrangements: "Our new capacity arrangements take effect 10th March 2026, offering greater flexibility and strong balance-sheet security, together with MECON’s high-quality cover where it really counts and its specialised claims handling team when it really counts."

For brokers, this development means the possibility of placing a greater share of mid- to large-scale projects with a single insurer, streamlining the insurance process and potentially reducing administrative complexities. Additionally, MECON's increased in-house underwriting authority is expected to shorten turnaround times on submissions, which is crucial for projects with fixed bid or funding deadlines.

In summary, MECON's enhanced capacity reflects its commitment to supporting the evolving needs of the Australian construction sector. By offering higher coverage limits and leveraging strategic partnerships, MECON is well-positioned to provide comprehensive insurance solutions for larger and more complex construction projects.
